Albert Sydney Medcalf established his butchers at No. 40 Exmouth Market in 1912. Albert took great pride in the quality of produce he offered and was renowned for his Angus beef.

Something of a sporting gent, Albert’s numerous fishing and hunting trips would see the butchers shop stocked with pike, wild salmon and game, alongside the usual meats and poultry.

This thriving business supported a staff of nine in the front of house. Behind the butchers was Albert’s’ apartment for which he employed two maids. It is clear he prospered and remained in control of the business until his death in 1947.

The lucky inheritor of Medcalf was Lil, the businesses cashier, who had also been Albert’s lover! She continued to run the butchers with her husband for another 30 years, until its closure in 1978. Throughout this time they had upheld the former proprietors strong principles on quality produce.

For the period after the butchers closure to the beginnings of the current bar in 2001, the property had many uses, from furniture market to wine cellar. The upkeep of the building was never a priority and it eventually became virtually derelict. Inspired by the unique frontage, the new design is modern and stylish while retaining traditional themes.
